Cristiano Ronaldo to be honoured as record-setting UEFA Champions League top scorer

New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players to have ever won the UEFA Champions League, having won the title five times. He is the leading goalscorer and is set to receive a special award from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin for his contribution. 

Ronaldo is supposed to be awarded during the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League draw ceremony on August 29th. During his career with European clubs, Ronaldo has scored 140 goals in 183 appearances and is the only player to score in consecutive 11 matches. During the 2013-14 tournament, the 39-year-old made the record for scoring most goals in a single season by a player, finding the net 17 times and being the leading goal scorer in seven tournaments. He also holds the distinction of having scored in three Champions League finals.

He has scored eight hat-tricks in the competition and is one of the most prolific players to have ever played in the UEFA club competition. He is also one of the only two players to have scored in all six games of the UEFA Champions League group stage and has scored overall the most goals in the knockout stage of the competition with 67 goals. 

His legacy as a player is undeniable despite the recent criticism he has received for failing to score a single goal in Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2024 tournament.

Having played for the biggest clubs in Europe, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, Ronaldo left the European football club circuit and joined the Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr. Recently, he was asked about his future; Ronaldo has remained uncertain but has clarified that he wishes to end his career with his current club. He has maintained that his decision to retire will be spontaneous and will most likely end his career with Al-Nassr.
