Saif Ali Khan comes from the royal Pataudi family, and his father was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the legendary Indian cricketer. They are the family of erstwhile nawabs of the former princely state of Pataudi, from which they take their name. Faiz Talab Khan, an ethnic Pashtun from Afghanistan’s Kandahar, became the first Nawab of the Pataudi State in 1804 after he helped the British East India Company during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. His descendants ruled the state till 1949 when it was merged with the Dominion of India.

The last ruling nawab was Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and the last recognised titular nawab was his son Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Actor Soha Ali Khan once said that since her brother Saif was born when royal titled hadn’t been abolished, he is an actual prince.

The Palace was built by Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi after he married Sajida Sultan, the daughter of the Nawab of Bhopal, Hamidullah Khan. As per reports, Iftikhar felt the old family home was not grand enough to house his new bride in the manner she was accustomed. Hence, he requested noted British architect Robert Tor Russell to design the new building and he was assisted by the Austrian architect, Karl Malte von Heinz. The construction of the palace was completed in 1935.

The construction of the Pataudi Palace was completed in 1935. The palace has 150 rooms and each room has unique colour palettes, furniture applications, and memorabilia of family members. The property was leased out to Francis Wacziarg and Aman Nath, owners of the Neemrana Hotels network. The palace was Pataudi Palace Hotel between 2005 and 2014. In 2014, Saif Ali Khan was offered the chance to buy back the property, and he jumped on the offer. After buying the palace, he renovated it.
