New Delhi: A 30-year-old Kevin Yanick Steen signed his first contract with WWE on August 12, 2014, a day he will probably never forget as he became Kevin Owens in the process. A decade has passed since his initial signing and it seems Owens has achieved it all. He became the second-ever WWE Universal Champion, headlined WrestleMania twice including a face-off with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin after 19 years of his retirement and becoming a popular star in the WWE.
He headlined WrestleMania for a second time when he paired with Zayn to take on The Usos and ultimately won the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Owens reminisced about the day he signed with WWE as if it was yesterday and remembered what went through him on that particular day.
“I remember the feeling I had at the time, that day when it all unfolded and it was being made official. Everybody’s reaction, and it was really great to see how happy people were for me and how much people were rooting for me. There were also a lot of people saying it’s not going to last six months. Looking back at it 10 years later is pretty wild,” Wrestling Inc. quoted the Canadian wrestler as saying.
What has Owens enjoyed the most in WWE?
A WWE superstar certainly cherishes the championships he bags and the accolades he receives over his career but Owens revealed that besides all of it, one of the things he has enjoyed the most about being in WWE is the connection he has had with certain fans. The WWE stars are worshipped by budding talents and their young fans as role models, someone who they look up to. Owens is one of those superstars who regularly keeps a tab on his fans and gives them back as well.
“That’s probably the best part. I’ve developed these relationships with some really incredible people that I would not have met if it wasn’t for WWE,” said the 40-year-old star. Owens’ WWE future stands unpredictable as of now as his current contract is set to expire next year.
