New Delhi: Plymouth have discarded their plans for a documentary that would have featured their battle against relegation from the Championship after Wayne Rooney’s exit from the club earlier in the week. Filming had been paused earlier last month after results took a turn south which ultimately led to Rooney’s departure from the club and reportedly there are no immediate plans to resume.
Though back in November, when the project was announced, Plymouth had signed for the documentary, it is clear that it was Rooney and his associates who were the real supporters of the whole exercise. The former Manchester United coach has close links with the production company, Lorton Entertainment who were making the documentary. Earlier the production company had made a one-off feature-length show called ‘Rooney’ for Amazon Prime Video three years ago.
Plymouth’s expectation from the documentary was that their image globally would be elevated and would be financially profitable when the documentary was sold to streaming services like Netflix or Amazon. However, a streak of 10 winless games has given rise to a feeling that the documentary might become a distraction. Filming began at the club’s Harper Park training ground and Lorton’s camera crew were given access to two Championship games before being told to take a break.
Lorton had also produced Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story, the documentary that featured Wanye Rooney’s wife’s court case against Rebekah Vardy, for Disney+. Lorton’s co-owner Kenny Shepherd happens to be a shareholder in the agency, Triple S Sports, who have managed Rooney’s career since he was a teenager at Everton. Plymouth haven’t issued any statement regarding the events.
Plymouth and their coaching woes
Plymouth have won just one of their last 14 matches under Rooney and are currently placed at the bottom of the Championship, as Rooney exits after only 25 games as in charge of the team. Plymouth’s director of football, Neil Dewsnip is also being anticipated for a departure after being blamed by the board for wrong appointments.

Dewsnip joined five years ago and during his time saw the team rise from League Tewo to Championship with managers Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher, however, his recent appointments haven’t brought the previous success to the club. Ian Foster was at the helm for only 16 games last season before Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell took over in April, saving the club from relegation.
Temporarily Nancekivell and captain Joe Edwards were given charge of the team that ended up with a 2-2 draw against Bristol City on Wednesday but are not being looked at as the permanent contenders for the role. Schumacher is one of the people who could be returning to the club just 13 months after leaving for Stoke who have since sacked him.
