Thiruvananthapuram: A section of Congress leaders and workers are looking to provide a facelift like never before for K Muralidharan, the senior Congress leader who recently lost to Suresh Gopi in the recently concluded polls and has decided to ‘take a break’ from active politics, presumably due to his indifferences with the party leadership who he believes did not support him during his campaigning in Thrissur.
Muralidharan has remained defiant on his stance that he will not contest any polls and is looking to remain invisible from the political spaces for the next one year.
More than the loss in Thrissur, for the Congress party it was all about losing to BJP through which saffron party opened its account in Kerala. The Congress party and Muralidharan had openly challenged the BJP and have said that they will not allow BJP to open its account in the state.
His supporters who were visibly dejected and disappointed heavily following the massive defeat in Thrissur where he finished a distant third has come up with posters mentioning ‘Muralidharan should be given the top post’, ‘Murali lost polls in an effort to save secularism’, ‘Murali for Palakkad’ and ‘Murali for Wayanad’. Posters were seen in major towns of Kerala including Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Kozhikode outside the Congress party offices.
“Congress party should not let down leader’s (Former CM K Karunakaran) son and ensure they give him the deserving post, be it that of KPCC president or allow him to contest from Wayanad or Palakkad”, said Johny Cherian, a local Congress activist and a hardcore supporter of K Muralidharan.
The posters that were stuck on the walls of the Congress offices in many parts of the state has led to serious discussions within the party as they are looking to pacify Muralidharan who has threatened to keep away from active politics.
Muralidharan’s younger sister Padmaja Venugopal had joined the BJP days before the elections leading to a verbal tussle between the duo who. Padmaja had warned Muralidharan and said that, ‘those who have cheated her in Congress will act in the same manner with her brother’.
The ‘poster’ protest by a the supporters of K Muralidharan and the Congress party’s outreach to Muralidharan indicates that the party cannot afford one more senior leader deserting the party and causing embarrassment for the party.
