Premier League 2024/25: Arsenal win North London Derby, Moyes loses on Everton return

New Delhi: Matchday 21 continued with more Premier League action around England, headlined by the North London Derby. Following a stark contrast from a host of draws from last night’s games, none of the games ended in a draw tonight as we saw two home sides and two away sides come out on top. Arsenal retain bragging rights over their North London rivals as they complete the double with a win at the Emirates in the headline clash of the day.

Meanwhile, Everton’s second David Moyes era got off with a loss as they lost to Aston Villa at Goodison Park by a slim margin. Newcastle continued their impressive recent form with a routine win over Wolves that sees them break into the top four. Leicester City’s terrible run continued with yet another defeat, this time to Crystal Palace, a team that are themselves struggling for form this season. Dive in to find out more about tonight’s results.

Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham

Arsenal welcomed Tottenham in the second North London derby of the season after winning the previous one at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. They edged past Tottenham 2-1 at the Emirates, keeping their title hopes alive. Despite dominating early, the Gunners fell behind after Son Heung-min’s deflected effort off William Saliba beat David Raya. Arsenal responded swiftly, with Gabriel’s header forcing an own goal from Dominic Solanke and Leandro Trossard netting just minutes later.

Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the second half but failed to convert chances, leaving Spurs with an opening. Pedro Porro nearly equalized late on, hitting the post from a tight angle. Arsenal closed the gap to four points behind leaders Liverpool, remaining firmly in the title race. With this win they complete a win over their old rivals following their win at the Tottenham Stadium earlier in the season and move back up to second on the league table.

Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park ended in disappointment as Everton fell 1-0 to Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins netted the winner in the 51st minute, capitalizing on Jarrad Branthwaite’s misplaced pass to clinically finish past Jordan Pickford. Earlier, Watkins squandered a chance when Ashley Young’s blind backpass sent him through, only for him to misfire. Morgan Rogers continued his purple patch for the Villans as he assisted Watkins’ eventual winner.

Everton, desperate for points, saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin miss two key chances, one cleared off the line by Boubacar Kamara. The Toffees also felt aggrieved when no penalty was awarded after Youri Tielemans appeared to bundle Calvert-Lewin over. Moyes’ side remains perilously close to the relegation zone, just one point clear. The return of their legendary manager did not fix the team’s patchy form and Moyes will have to dig deep to get his side back scoring again if they are to avoid relegation this season.

Newcastle 3-0 Wolves

Alexander Isak’s brilliant form continued as Newcastle beat Wolves 3-0, matching their record of nine consecutive wins. Isak opened the scoring with a deflected strike and added a second after the break, latching onto Bruno Guimaraes’ pass. He then assisted Anthony Gordon for the third, rounding off a dominant display. Both Gordon and Isak carried Newcastle to another win, expressing how integral they are to this Newcastle side as their goals have now helped them up to fourth in the league.

Wolves created some chances, with Jorgen Strand Larsen hitting the post and Matheus Cunha going close twice. Santiago Bueno had a goal disallowed, and Martin Dubravka made a superb save late on. Newcastle move into the top four, while Wolves slip into the relegation zone on goal difference. Wolves seem to have lost their new manager bounce at Vitor Pereira’s arrival had brought following three games without a win now, as the club dangerously flirts with relegation once again.

Leicester City 0-2 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace secured a vital 2-0 win at Leicester City, handing the Foxes their sixth consecutive defeat and piling pressure on Ruud van Nistelrooy. Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, rounding the keeper after a brilliant run and pass from Ismaila Sarr. Marc Guehi sealed the win with a stunning volley from a free-kick. Palace earned a much needed win over the Foxes which has propelled them over Manchester United in the standings for the time being.

Leicester dominated the first half but failed to convert chances, with Jamie Vardy missing a one-on-one. The Foxes’ efforts improved after going behind, but Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare missed key opportunities, the latter hitting the bar. Leicester remain 19th, while Palace climb to 14th, eight points clear of relegation. Van Nistelrooy has failed to inspire Leicester back to form and has only won one of his games as the Foxes boss and he should use the transfer window to get the Foxes firing again as time is running out for the Manchester United legend.
