Premier League 2024/25: Nottingham stay level with Arsenal, Everton edge past Spurs

New Delhi: Matchday 22 in the Premier League continued with superb performances on Sunday after games on Saturday saw Liverpool pool go six points clear at the top as Arsenal failed to get all three points as they played for a draw in the weekend highlight game against Aston Villa.  Liverpool’s win over Brentford was their first Premier League win of the year.

The fight for the title continues as Nottingham Forest closed in on Arsenal, with both teams now level on 44 points. Everton, needed a win desperately to keep themselves away from the relegation zone against a Tottenham Hotspur side whose recent performances had put them down to the 15th place. Manchester United though have struggled throughout the season though they came to the draw with a positive mindset having secured four from six available points.

Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton

Nottingham Forest have been in the form of their life, as they started their weekend draw, just a win away from equalling Arsenal’s in the points though the Gunners remain ahead due to their Goal difference. Elliot Anderson opened the scoring for the Tricky Trees after a lovely throw-in from Morgan Gibbs-White to go 1-0 up in the 11th minute. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored just 17 minutes later after being set up brilliantly by Chris Wood. Wood himself got on the scoring in the 41st minute when he headed a perfect cross from Ola Aina. Forest went into the break in a commanding position as the scoresheet read 3-0.

Southampton though came back from the break with more intent as Jan Bednarek deflected a long-range shot from Lesley Ugochukwu that went past Matz Sels. This had managed to give some confidence to the Saints who kept getting on the offensive. Paul Onuanchu scored Southampton’s second goal from Mateus Fernandes’s corner as the Saints looked hungry for a single point. However, Nottingham ensured that they took home the vital three points as the title race stayed tight at the end of the game.

Everton 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Facing a relegation threat, Everton hosted an unreliable Tottenham Hotspur at the Goodison Park. In the 13th minute, Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke the deadlock when he made a good finish going past Antonin Kinsky with Idrissa Gana Gueye picking up his first assist in the competition. The Toffees were constantly pressing for their second goal and half an hour from kickoff, Iliman Ndiaye found the back of the net with Gueye picking up his second assist. Everton picked their third in the stoppage time after Archie Gray made an own goal. The hosts had better possession in the first half and were dominating the game.

The visitors were given some hope when Dejan Kulusevski went over Jordan Pickford’s head to score the Lillywhites’s first goal in the 77th minute. This was followed by Richarlison scoring in the stoppage time from Mikey Moore’s assist. However, Everton kept their nerves enough to take all three points and for now stay safe from the relegation zone, thanks to their rare three goals in the opening half.  Spurs though had a better second half, it just wasn’t enough to take home a single point.

Manchester United 1-3 Brighton and Hove Albion

At Old Trafford, it was Brighton and Hove Albion who opened the score just five minutes from kick-off when Yankuba Minteh tapped in an amazing assist from Kaoru Mitoma after a brilliant run. However, Bruno Fernandes cancelled the lead with a penalty shot from 12 yards as Bart Verbruggen failed to judge the ball rolling into the left corner. Both sides though didn’t produce much chances otherwise and headed into the break 1-1.

The story after the break was completely different as the Seagulls were much more aggressive and kept pressing. Mitoma scored at the mark of an hour, with Minteh making an outstanding cross from wide. Georginio Rutter then ensured that Brighton took all three points as Onana fumbled to collect a ball. Rutter tapped the ball into an empty net as United simply showed no resistance at their home ground.

Nottingham Forest collected all three points to ensure they end their weekend level with Arsenal as Everton stays safe from relegation zone. Brighton take an easy win at Old Trafford against Manchester United.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
