New Delhi: Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea finally managed to end a run of five games without a win as they beat Vitor Pereira’s Wolves comfortably at home. Chelsea started the day sitting sixth in the points table after Manchester City’s thumping of Ipswich Town on Sunday but headed into the clash knowing that a first win in over a month would leapfrog them above both City and Newcastle United back into the top four.
The game started in typical fashion for the Blues, similarly to how their last five games began with Enzo Maresca’s side threatening to take the lead. Their perseverance did pay off mid way through the first half as Tosin Adarbioyo produced a neat finish from a corner to put the Blues ahead. However, just like they have done in previous games, Chelsea lost concentration for a period of time which allowed Wolves to come back into the game.
Vitor Pereira’s men dominated the final minutes of the first half and the Midlands club took advantage of their dominance minutes before half time. Another huge error from Robert Sanchez gifted a goal to Wolves as the Spaniard dropped an inswinging corner right in front of the goal which was poked into the net by Matt Doherty. Wolves went into the break happier of the two sides as they managed to get back on level terms despite Chelsea dominating the game.
Maresca’s half-time talk probably uplifted his boys as Chelsea came out all guns blazing and within 15 minutes of the restart, the Blues were ahead once again, this time through another defender as Marc Cucurella got in on the act. Noni Madueke’s cross into the box was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury Hall onto an incoming Cucurella was produced a delicate finish to give his side the lead again before Madueke got himself on the scoresheet to wrap up the three points.
Palmer’s corner was headed goal wards by a returning Trevoh Chalobah but Madueke got his head to the ball before it crossed the line, claiming a fourth goal against Wolves this season, following up on his hattrick at the Molineux. With a third successive defeat under Vitor Pereira, Wolves remain in 17th place on goal difference but find themselves four points behind Everton, who sit in 16th with a game in hand.
