PV Sindhu to Sushil Kumar: Indian athletes with most individual medals in Olympics history

New Delhi: India will be looking to create history as they aim to better their medals tally from the last edition in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. India recorded their best-ever performance in the last edition in Tokyo where they bagged a total of seven medals, including one gold. A total of 117 athletes are part of India’s contingent in Paris with many of them strong contenders for medals in their respective categories.

Neeraj Chopra rewrote history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 when he became the first Indian to win a gold medal in track and field in athletics. Neeraj finished on the top of the podium in the men’s javelin throw final to clinch the elusive gold medal and become only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal in the history of the Games.

However, Neeraj is not the most successful Indian athlete at the Olympics when it comes to individual medals. Three Indians have won two individual medals each at the Olympics, however, none of them have managed to win gold yet.

Indians with most individual medals in Olympics

British-Indian athlete Norman Pritchard, who won India’s first-ever medal at the Olympics, leads the list of athletes with the most individual medals for India at the Games. Pritchard was the first athlete to represent India at the 1900 Olympics in Paris and won two silver medals in Athletics. Apart from Pritchard, only Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu have won more than one individual medal for India at the Olympics.

Wrestler Sushil won his maiden Olympic medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he bagged bronze in the men’s 66kg category. He followed it up with a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics to become India’s most successful wrestler in the history of the Olympics. Sindhu won her maiden Olympic medal at the Rio Games in 2016.

She went down in the final against Carolina Marin to win a silver medal in women’s singles at Rio. Sindhu followed it up with a bronze medal in the last edition of the Olympics in Tokyo. Sindhu is the only Indian shuttler with multiple medals at the Olympics.

Indian athletes with most individual medals at Olympics:

1) Norman Pritchard – 2 silver medals (1900)

2) Sushil Kumar – 1 bronze, 1 silver (2008, 2012)

3) PV Sindhu – 1 silver, 1 bronze (2016, 2020)

Pritchard remains India’s most successful individual athlete at the Olympics with two silver medals to his name. Sindhu will have a chance to surpass Pritchard as the most successful Olympian for India with a third medal at the Paris Olympics. If Sindhu manages to clinch a medal in Paris, Sindhu will become the first Indian athlete to win three medals in the history of the Games.
