Rafael Nadal to skip singles at Paris Olympics 2024? Bandage pic casts doubt over participation

New Delhi: Speculations of Rafael Nadal’s participation in men’s singles event at the Paris Olympics 2024 came into the fore after visuals of the tennis star wearing a bandage on thigh during a training session on Friday (July 26) went viral.

Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, has confirmed that the 33rd edition of the Summer Games will be his last appearance in the quadrennial showpiece. He will participate in men’s singles and also pair with Spain’s prodigious talent Carlos Alcaraz in men’s doubles in a bid to add a third Olympics medal to his tally.

However, a video clip published by X handle of La hora de La 1 (a Spanish television programme) showed Nadal training with Alcaraz at Court Philippe-Chatrier. The senior tennis Spain player was seen wearing a strapping on his right thigh. This adds a bit to his injury scare after the 38-year-old skipped practice session on Thursday.

Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya mentioned that the ‘Clay King’ was in discomfort after his first training session on Wednesday.

“He had some discomfort yesterday (Wednesday) morning. In the afternoon he was more limited and before it got worse he decided to stop,” Moya told Spanish radio, as quoted by news agency AFP.

There is no confirmation whether Nadal will pull out of the event as his draw for the men’s singles and men’s doubles schedule was revealed on Thursday.

Who will face Rafael Nadal in first round of men’s singles at Paris Olympics?

Rafael Nadal was drawn against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 64 of Paris Olympics 2024 men’s singles. A win from Spaniard will potentially pit him against old rival Novak Djokovic in the second round. Nadal and Alcaraz will take on Argentine seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the first round of men’s doubles.

Nadal has won two gold medals at the Olympics – men’s singles in Beijing Olympics 2008 and men’s doubles in Rio Olympics 2016 along with Marc Lopez.
