New Delhi: La Liga giants Real Madrid are on the verge of signing Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen after agreeing to pay the defender’s £50m release clause.

The 20-year-old Spain international has set his sights on joining Real and is close to agreeing personal terms with the Spanish club. The talented youngster has turned down a number of offers to remain in England.

The La Liga club will activate the release clause in the player’s Bournemouth contract, which he inked less than 12 months ago.

The fee, which will be divided into three instalments, will also go to Huijsen’s former clubs, with Juventus set to receive 10% and Malaga 5%.

Huijsen deal nears completion

As per a report in BBC Sport, the deal is near completion with a full agreement expected soon.

Real were adamant to sign the player before next month’s inaugural Club World Cup in the US. Huijsen rejected as many as seven offers after attracting interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle.

But the Spanish international has decided to return to his homeland, where he played for the Costa Unida CF academy in Marbella and Malaga’s youth team.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who is primed to replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real manager, has played a crucial role in deciding to sign the defender and prioritised signing a young centre-back.

A profitable deal for the Cherries

Huijsen joined the Cherries from Italian club Juventus last summer for a fee of £12.6m. The Netherlands-born footballer played 34 matches in all competitions for Bournemouth and scored three times.

With Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold destined to move to Madrid, Huijsen is in line to become the Spanish club’s second signing from the Premier League this summer.

Huijsen, despite having an option to play for the Netherlands, where he was born, chose to play for Spain, where he was raised.

He, ironically, made his debut for the 2024 European champions against the Netherlands in March 2025.
