Revealed! Why are Real Madrid in a hurry to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold?

New Delhi: Real Madrid are reportedly aiming to sign Liverpool’s star right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, before the start of the Club World Cup. The England international has reportedly confirmed his impending exit from his boyhood club at the end of the season and is widely expected to join the Spanish giants as a free agent.

While the 26-year-old’s contract is set to expire on June 30th, the Club World Cup is scheduled to begin 16 days earlier. This timeline is the driving force behind Madrid’s desire to secure his services before the tournament kicks off. Alexander-Arnold is familiar with the competition, having helped the Reds lift the Club World Cup trophy in 2019.

According to reports, Los Blancos have already approached Liverpool with a view to negotiating a deal for the early release of the England defender. This move would allow him to integrate with the squad and potentially feature in the Club World Cup. He is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Spanish capital club.

He reportedly announced on Monday his decision to leave Anfield after two decades at the club. In a statement attributed to him, he said, “After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.” He added, “I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was my full intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing number 20.”

Madrid’s eagerness to accelerate Alexander-Arnold’s arrival is reportedly due to the defensive issues they are currently facing at right-back. Veteran defender Dani Carvajal is understood to be out injured, leaving attacking player Lucas Vázquez to fill in the position, highlighting the need for a specialist in that role.

Adding urgency to the situation, FIFA has confirmed a special short transfer window this summer, specifically for clubs competing in the Club World Cup. This window will run from June 1st to June 10th and is designed to help participating teams amend their squads in time for the competition.

Potential benefit for Liverpool

Madrid’s clear intention to secure Alexander-Arnold in time presents a significant opportunity for Liverpool. While the defender is set to leave for free at the end of his contract, negotiating an early release fee could allow the Reds to secure at least some financial compensation for a high-value player who would otherwise depart for no fee on June 30th.
