New Delhi: United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak may resign as Conservative Party leader on Friday as Labour Party wons enough seats to have majority in the UK Parliament.
According to reports, Sunak’s Conservative Party is far behind the victory mark while his opponent Keir Starmer’s Labour Party secured 351 seats.
As per survey for UK broadcasters, the centre-left Labour Party would win 410 seats in the 650-seat House which will mark its return to power after 14 years.
The survey indicates that Conservative party was projected to secure only 131 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of UK’s parliament. Nigel Farage’s anti-immigration Reform UK party, which would win 13 seats, appears to be dividing the right-wing vote, as per media sources.
In another gain for the centrists, the smaller opposition Liberal Democrats was projected to win 61 seats, surpassing the Scottish National Party, which is expected to get 10 seats, as the third-largest party.
This anticipation contrasts with the rightward shift seen among Britain’s closest Western allies, where the far-right in France is eyeing another term in office, and Donald Trump is trying hard to gets the keys of office of United States President.
Both Starmer and Sunak thanked their activists for their hard work and support throughout the election campaign.
The first result was announced just over an hour after the polls closed at 2100 GMT, with Bridget Phillipson of the Labour Party securing another term as the MP for Houghton and Sunderland South in northeast England.
