New Delhi: In a fresh twist to the wrestlers’ fight against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, wrestler Sakshi Malik has claimed the entire protest was planned and orchestrated by BJP leader Babita Phogat. Sakshi has revealed Babita wanted to oust Brij Bhushan as the WFI president to herself grab the top position in the wrestling body of India.
Malik made some sensational revelations in her interview with India Today where she revealed Babita encouraged the protest against Brijbhushan assuring the wrestlers that she would bring much-needed transformation in the WFI if she was appointed president. Malik said the wrestlers trusted her as she was someone who had been in their shoes and knew their struggles inside out.
However, they didn’t have an idea about Babita’s sole agenda to grab power in the WFI by displacing Brij Bhushan from the top post. Sakshi also revealed Babita initially portrayed herself as an ally but didn’t sit with the wrestlers during their protests at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and controlled everything from the backstage.
“Babita Phogat approached us with the idea of protesting against Brij Bhushan Singh because she had her own agenda—she wanted to become the WFI president,” said Malik. “We trusted her because we believed that a woman leader, particularly one who has been in our shoes as a sportsperson, would understand our struggles,” Sakshi told India Today.
