New Delhi: The hype of Virat Kohli making his return to Indian domestic cricket after a span of nearly 13 years was at crescendo not just at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here, but around the cricket fraternity. While two stands were initially open for the spectators, there was huff and puff among the crowd to settle in the stands. Some of them were waiting to get through the gates since the wee hours.
However, there was a moment of intrusion in the first session of the match. In the 12th over bowled by Delhi pacer Money Grewal, a fan among the mammoth crowd, exceeding the capacity of 15,000, breached the security barricades to step on the pitch. It wasn’t a normal step apparently, of course a risk was carried of violating the spectators’ limits, but then there was a desire to meet his icon – Virat Kohli, the man who has defined his legacy in cricket, particularly the indelible impact on making India a red-ball powerhouse during his reign.

The spectator sprinted, nonchalantly, toward the pitch, not having a tinge of worry on getting caught by the chasing security guards. He wanted to touch the feet of Kohli and he was successful in it. The player, though went a couple of steps behind to politely refuse, but by the time he could have his say, the fan was already down at his feet with the head embracing the surface, where the former Indian skipper was positioned (in the Delhi slip cordon).
The fan was eventually nabbed and eventually taken off the court, and subsequently shown the door from the venue. Kohli did gestured to the security personnel to handle the intruder with ease. It isn’t strange to watch a fan breaching barricades in cricket match, but it’s seldom in a domestic game. No wonder the reason was Virat Kohli.
