SFI joining protests over Plus-1 allocation keeps government in the backfoot

Malappuram: The ruling LDF (Left Democratic Front) in Kerala has been red-faced after its own student’s wing – the SFI (Student Federation of India) has led a major protest against the government for allegedly failing to address the issue of non-availability of Plus-1 seats even though the state government reiterating that there are vacant seats left in many government- aided colleges.

On Saturday education minister V Shivan Kutty has refuted the statements made by opposition student wing groups that there are vacant seats in Malappuram.  Shivan Kutty countered the claims stating that Malappuram has 21,550 vacant seats including unaided seats, while the number of applicants stands at 14,037.

However, various student organizations including KSU, MSF declared state-wide protests alleging that the state government has failed allotting plus-1 seats. However, the SFI taking up the matter and protesting against the statement by the state education minister has embarrassed the government which has called for a discussion with the various student groups on Tuesday.

As per official statistics, 3.16 lakh of the 4.21 lakh Plus-I seat applicants in the state secured admission when the main allotment was completed. A total of 77,997 students have not joined schools even after being allotted seats.

However, protests turned violent in many places including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Ernakulam with student wing groups including KSU, MSF protesting barring the heavy rains. Police had to resort to the usage of water canons and Lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

“Based on the directions of the chief minister, a meeting of the representatives of various student organisations has been convened on Tuesday, primarily to discuss complaints of seat shortage in the Malappuram district. Further action, if needed, will be taken on the basis of the outcome of the discussions,” Shivankutty said.

As per current scenario in the Plus-1 admissions, In Malappuram district alone, there are 74,840 applicants of which 49,906 are already admitted. Another 10,897 have not joined any schools after being allotted seats.
