Shocking! Russian chess player attempts to poison opponent by spilling mercury on board – WATCH

New Delhi: A Russian women chess player has been reportedly suspended by the Chess Federation of Russia after a video footage caught her attempting to poison an opponent at the Dagestan Chess Championship in Makhachkala. According to a report from The Sun, a video from security footage on August 2 captured 40-year-old Amina Abakarova walked across the room where the chess event was supposed to take place.

Abakarova approached one of the desks where all the chess boards were placed. She was seen carrying a carry bag and placed the same under the desk. Later, she found another desk and appeared to put a dark grey powder on the board. The Sun report stated that the tournament organisers found out that powder to be mercury. Using one of the chess pieces, the Russian spread the powder on the edges of the table.

How Amina Abakarova’s attempt was caught?

Abakarova’s opponent was Umayganat Osmanova, her childhood rival. The player, who allegedly applied the mercury, aimed for a revenge for a personal insult linked to the differences between the two in the past.

The attempt by the Russian chess player was found only after a tournament judge noticed Osmanova’s discomfort.

“We have video proof showing that one of the players at the Dagestani chess championship, Amina Abakarova from the city of Makhachkala, applied an unidentified substance, which later turned out to contain mercury, to the table where Umayganat Osmanova from the city of Kaspiisk was set to play against her,” Sazhid Sazhidov, the president of the Russian Republic of Dagestan for physical culture and sports, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The report mentioned that Abakarova later admitted to attempting to the poison. She told the police that she broke a thermometre on the table and spread mercury across the board.
