New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Himani Mor in an intimate wedding ceremony on January 19. The news of his marriage came as a surprise to many when Neeraj took to social media to share pictures of his wedding with Himani. His wedding preparations were kept under wraps and the couple exchanged vows at a resort near Solan in Himachal Pradesh away from the limelight.
Neeraj recently opened up on his love story with his better half Himani and also revealed how the couple managed to keep their wedding ceremony a secret. Neeraj revealed his close friends and family members knew about his wedding while his loved ones in his village Khandra in Haryana’s Panipat were also aware of his big day but decided to let the couple tie the knot in a private ceremony.
Spilling the beans about his love story with Himani, Neeraj said it was easier to connect for the couple because Himani too came from a family with a sporting background as her parents were both kabaddi players. Himani himself played tennis professionally but decided to focus on her studies after giving up the sport due to injury issues.
Neeraj revealed their parents knew each other and the initial conversations between the couple were casual before they eventually fell in love. Earlier, Neeraj’s uncle, Surendra Chopra had revealed that the couple feel in love after meeting in the US and that both families approved of their relationship.
“I knew her. She also comes from a family with a sports background, and so do we. Her father and mother were kabaddi players. Her brothers were boxers and wrestlers. She herself was a tennis player, but after picking up injuries, she focused more on her studies,” Neeraj told Sports Today.
“Because our families had a sports background, we had the opportunity to meet. Our conversations began like that—just two athletes talking. It was casual at first, but slowly, we fell in love,” he added.
There will be a grand function soon: Neeraj Chopra
While thanking the people of his village for understanding the situation, Neeraj revealed the couple are also planning to host a grand reception soon for everyone. The javelin superstar revealed he decided to get married in a private affair as there was not enough time to invite everyone and that he wanted to wrap up the ceremonies before resuming training for the 2025 season.
“No, quite a few people knew I was going to get married. Families and friends knew. I wanted to return to training because the season was about to start. I thought it would only be possible after the season. Inviting everyone would have taken time,” Neeraj said.
“Hopefully, there will be a grand function soon with everyone invited. No, no, people in my village understood. Whenever there is a function, the entire village is invited – be it my sister’s wedding or my return after winning the Tokyo Olympics. They know that whenever Himani and I are free, we will host the function,” he added.
Neeraj, who won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics last year, is currently training under his new coach Jan Zalezny, a former Olympic and world champion. Neeraj’s season will begin in May and the Indian javelin star is hoping to breach the elusive 90m mark this season to continue his medal-winning spree at the international level.
