Smriti Mandhana scripts history, breaks Mithali Raj’s record with 8th ODI century

New Delhi: Indian women’s team star Smriti Mandhana scripted history as she broke the legendary Mithali Raj’s all-time record after notching up her 8th ODI ton on Tuesday. Mandhana achieved the feat in the 3rd ODI against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Indian opener played a magnificent knock of 100 runs in India’s run-chase against the Kiwis.

With her splendid ton, Mandhana went past Mithali on the list of Indian batters with the most centuries in women’s ODIs. Mandhana now holds the record for smashing the most centuries for India in women’s ODIs. The prolific left-hander has 8 centuries and 27 fifties to her name in 88 ODIs for India. Mithali, who is the leading run-getter for India in women’s ODIs, finished her career with 7 hundreds and 64 fifties and 232 matches.

Mandhana starred with the bat as India defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the 3rd and final ODI to clinch the three-match series 2-1. Mandhana’s century helped India chase down the target of 233 runs comfortably with 5.5 overs to spare. Mandhana was well supported by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who slammed an unbeaten 59 runs off 63 balls.
