Telangana: Dalit policeman alleges caste harassment by seniors, dies by suicide

Hyderabad: A sub-inspector who has been battling for his life after a suicide attempt a week ago died in a hospital in the city on Sunday.

The sub-inspector identified as Sriramula Srinivas, took this extreme measure of consuming pesticide after facing harassment from his seniors, regarding his caste. The incident took place in Mahabubabad on June 30. He was admitted to a hospital in Warangal for treatment but he had to be shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad, where he died.

He was a native of Narakkapet village and was posted to Ashwaraopet from Manugur last year and is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.

A case was registered against Circle Inspector K Jithender Reddy and Constables Shiva, Sanyasi, Subhani and Shekhar under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, after Sriramulu’s wife Krishnaveni filed a complaint.

The SI’s family members alleged that the other cops tried to portray him as corrupt and got this false information published in local news papers.

Dalit organisations call for justice:

In the wake of his death, Dalit organisations demanded strict action against those who are responsible for his death.

Mala Mahanadu President P Sudhakar said harassment against Dalit police officers has gone up in the police system.

Meanwhile, CI Jithender Reddy was transferred by senior officials, reports said.

BRS leader and former MLA Peddi Sudarshan Reddy spoke to the media and demanded a judicial inquiry into the suicide of the SI and asked for stringent action against the culprits. The former MLA announced Rs 1 crore ex-gratia to the family of the deceased.
