Fishermen in the coastal village of Gilakaladindi, Machilipatnam mandal, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh caught two Whale Sharks, which weighed about 1,500kg, video showed.
The giant whale was brought to shore of Gilakaladindi harbor, with the help of a crane, which attracted a large number of curious locals to catch a glimpse of the whale.
Fisherman Vishwanathpalli Veera Babu said that they caught two giant sharks on Friday and one of them was dead. On close examination found that they were of the Chukka Sora breed and had no sale value. The dead and live fish were both released back into the sea, reports said.
The fisherman slammed reports that the fishes were bought by Chennai traders and stated that the fish caught was not teak breed. “Due to low pressure conditions in Bay of Bengal, the sea became turbulent, leading large sharks closer to the shore and get caught in nets.”
Teak fishes have an estimated market value of Rs 2 lakh per tonne and are very rare, the fisherman said.
Wildlife Conservation Through Research and Education (WCTRE) founder and conservationist, Vivek Rathod, based in Visakhapatnam confirmed that it was whale shark and was listed as an endangered species on the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list.
In February this year, a 15-feet long whale shark washed up on the shores of Srikakulam beach near Donkuru village, weighing approximately 2 tonne. A video from the beach showed children jumping on the carcass of the dead shark whale.
