‘This one’s for you’: Nitish Reddy pays tribute to his father after maiden Test ton

New Delhi: Nitish Reddy paid a heartwarming tribute to his father after slamming his maiden century for India in the 4th Test against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday, December 28. Nitish slammed an unbeaten 105 to bail India out of trouble in their first innings of the Test match and become the 3rd youngest from the country to score a Test ton in Australia.

Nitish’s father couldn’t control his emotions as he watched his son notch up his first-ever ton in an India jersey from the stands at the MCG. Mutyalu Reddy shed tears of joy as he witnessed his son go on to fulfil a dream that the father-son duo had harboured together years ago.

Mutyalu, who made immense sacrifices to support his son in his cricketing journey, had his heart swelling with pride as he saw the 21-year-old get a standing ovation from thousands of fans at the MCG. Nitish’s father quit his government job in 2012 despite 25 years of service remaining to support his son in his cricketing journey full time.

He had a chance to shift to Udaipur to continue in his role at Hindustan Zinc. However, he decided against travelling to a new state to ensure Nitish didn’t face any hurdles in his cricket training. From taking him to coaching classes to travelling him with to matches, Mutyalu remained a constant support for Nitish as he eventually realised his dream of playing for India.

After smashing his maiden Test century for India, the 21-year-old rising star took to his social media handles to dedicate his knock to his father. “This one’s for you, dad,” Nitish wrote while sharing a picture of his father crying in the stands after he completed his maiden Test century at the MCG on Saturday. The post has gone viral on social media, garnering love from the fans.

While Reddy finished with an unbeaten 105, Sundar scored a gritty 50 as India ended with 358/9 at stumps on Day 3, trailing Australia by 116 runs.
