‘Continuing increase in death tolls’

In the meantime, the death toll from the landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district continue to increase as rescuers, braving rains and challenging terrain, searched for close to 300 persons who are still missing since rhe day of the incident. “The death toll from landslides has risen to 195,” news agency PTI quoted Wayanad District Collector Meghashree as saying.

There are fears that that the death toll may increase further, as many more body parts were collected, with genetic testing underway in order to identify their remains. According to Kerala ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, nearly 300 people were still missing.

“Based on the information we have received till now, approximately around 300 people are still missing. However, the Revenue Department is still collating the details. Within one or two days we will be able to get a final picture,” the news agency quoted Kumar as saying.
