Tony Ferguson puts one glove down, teases retirement after record eighth straight loss

New Delhi: UFC legendary fighter Tony Ferguson was defeated again, this time in the welterweight division by Michael Chiesa via a rear-naked choke at Etihad Arena in UFC Abu Dhabi on August 4, Sunday. Tony now lost eight consecutive fights in the UFC and surpassed B.J. Penn for the longest-losing streak in UFC history. El Cucuy hasn’t won any fight since 2019.

Ferguson was looking fresh before the fight and fans are chanting his name all over the arena. Ferguson came out pressuring Chiesa in the initial minutes but Chiesa delivered some brutal leg kicks and hooks. Ferguson also responded with a leg kick and forwarding towards Chiesa. Chiesa then struck a combination but Ferguson responded well and landed a jab.

But the weight difference played a major role as Ferguson was fighting for just the second time in the Welterweight division, Chiesa knocked down Ferguson and dragged him to the ground. With no time ruined Chiesa took Ferguson’s back and locked the rear-naked choke, Ferguson initially fought back but didn’t survive as Chiesa perfectly locked the choke and submitted Ferguson in the first round.

After the loss, Ferguson said ‘I didn’t want to retire’, he put his one glove down in the octagon as he partially retired but he kept the second glove with him as he waited for Dana White’s response and also Ferguson had some fights left in his contract. Ferguson didn’t retire fully from UFC and fans might see him in the future.

Joel Alvarez knocks out Elves Brener by Knee stoppage

Alvarez maintained his 100 percent finishing ratio as he finished Brener with his knees in the third round. Alvarez was dominant throughout the fight, ending the first round by locking D’Arce’s choke which Brener survived but Alvarez continuously landed strikes in the second round and finished Brener in the third round by Knee stoppage. It was his 21st win with a 21st finish.
