New Delhi: Australian batters are united in belief that they can tackle the potent pace threat of Indian bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah.
Australian crumbled to a 295-run loss in the opening Test of their five-game Border Gavaskar series to India at Perth.
They were unable to counter the heat generated by Bumrah’s pace and swing that yielded him eight wickets in the match including five in the first innings.
It was Australia’s heaviest defeat on their home soil against India as they lost the opening Test of a home series for the first time since 2018.
Bumrah worry for Aussies
Australia’s batters collectively flopped and they are keen to find a way to bat longer in the pink ball day-night second Test at Adelaide from December 6.
Carey said they would look to bat out the opening spell of Bumrah, where he is most lethal, and then possibly counter attack as done by Travis Head during his 89-run knock in the second innings at Perth.
“He’s obviously a fantastic bowler; (he) has been for a number of years. Our batters are world class as well and always find ways to come up with solutions,” Carey said on Tuesday, as quoted by PTI.
“We’ve had a look at him now. Hopefully we can combat that first, second spell. Get him bowling a little bit deeper in the innings with an older ball.
“We saw Travis (Head) sort of counterpunch a bit (in the second innings). I trust our batters, we’ll find a way not only (against) Bumrah. They played a couple of other debutantes who bowled well as well,” he added.
‘No tension within team’
Carey also dismissed reports of rift in the team after Josh Hazlewood had questioned the performance of batters during the Perth game, insisting they remain determined to tide over the obstacle in front of them.
“If you ask the batters, we all want to perform better and (as) cricketers, you go out there to score a hundred and if you don’t do that, I think you’re at times disappointed,” he said.
“But we’re a very united group. We all do get the opportunity to bat and we’re all keen to continue to put those big runs on the board and I trust the guys to do that.”
The keeper-batter said they remain confident of their preparation and methodology and wouldn’t make any drastic changes though the manner of their loss had sparked a big reaction externally.
“It’s quite a big reaction externally for one Test loss. Internally, we don’t feel that. We didn’t play the way we would have liked to have played,” Carey said.
“We know (that) over four or five Test matches, (if) we keep rocking up and playing our style of cricket we will have the success. We’ve had that success to, I guess, call upon the method does work.
“We’re calm internally, we’re excited to get back out and play a better style of cricket and we’ve got that opportunity come Friday.”
