Vinesh Phogat stuns defending champion Yui Susaki to storm into Paris Olympics 2024 quarterfinals

New Delhi: Indian ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat qualified for the quarterfinals of the women’s 50kg freestyle event after defeating Japan’s Yui Susaki 3-2 in her opening wrestling (Round of 16) bout at the Paris Olympics 2024. It was an upset for the defending Olympic champion who was beaten in the final seconds of the game, making it a thrilling battle to seal a quarterfinal berth.

During the bout, Phogat had initially lost a couple of points and was trailing 0-2 for the majority of the match but she scripted a brilliant turnaround within the final 20 seconds to stun the world no. 1 seed. Vinesh has beaten the four-time world champion and reigning gold-medallist Susaki and will play her quarterfinal clash against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach later this evening.
