Vinod Kambli like my son: Sunil Gavaskar says 1983 WC team will support ex- cricketer

New Delhi: The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has extended support to struggling former India cricketer Vinod Kambli stating that he is like his son. Kambli garnered headlines recently after a video of his reunion with his former teammate and friend Sachin Tendulkar went viral on social media. The video sparked concerns regarding Kambli’s mental health and his overall well-being.

Soon after the video went viral, the members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, including former skipper Kapil Dev stepped forward to lend a helping hand to Kambli. Gavaskar confirmed the same and said the 1983 World Cup-winning team was conscious of the younger players and would take care of Kambli.

Speaking about Kambli, Gavaskar said cricketers like him are like his ‘sons’ as he reassured everyone that the 1983 World Cup-winning team will have the former batter get back on his feet. Recently, Kapil Dev had offered to pay for Kambli’s entire treatment if the former batter decided to go to rehab again.

“The 1983 team is very conscious of the younger players. For me, they are like grandsons. If you see their age, some are like sons. We are all very concerned, particularly when fortunes desert them. I don’t like the word help. What the 83 team wants to do is take care of him,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.

“We want to take care of Vinod Kambli and help him get back on his feet. How we will do, we’ll see in the future. We want to take care of cricketers who are struggling when fortunes don’t smile on them,” he added.

Vinod Kambli battling multiple health issues

After Kambli’s video of holding Tendulkar’s hand at the public event went viral recently, his close friend Marcus Couto, a former first-class umpire revealed the former India batter’s ordeal. Couto told PTI that Kambli has been battling severe health issues and has already been to rehab 14 times. Kambli’s battle with alcohol addiction is well known.

While his video with Tendulkar sparked concerns, another video of the former India batter had left the fans shocked recently. In the alarming video, Kambli was seen struggling to walk properly and maintain his balance. He was able to walk only after getting assistance from the bystanders.

Kambli’s health issues have united the 1983 World Cup-winning team once again as they are coming together to help the former batter in recovering from his persistent health problems and live a healthy life.
