New Delhi: India’s tour of Sri Lanka might already be underway but the fans are feeling the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two modern-day greats and super-entertaining players. The Indian legends are not part of the T20I squad having retired from the shortest format of international cricket following India’s historic T20 World Cup victory in the Americas in June. The Men in Blue, led by Suryakumar Yadav, have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series after clinching the second T20I by seven wickets in Kandy on Sunday.
The third and final match will be played in Pallekele before the action moves to the 50-over format for the three-match series. The ODI series, which begins on Friday, August 2, will mark the return of Virat and Rohit, who will continue playing for India in the ODI and Test formats. While Rohit will return to lead the Indian side, Virat will slot back at his favourite number three position in the Indian batting order.
After celebrating India’s T20 WC win in Delhi and Mumbai, Virat flew to London to spend time with his wife Anushka and two kids.
Ahead of his much-anticipated return to action on the field, Virat arrived in Sri Lanka’s capital on Monday. A video that is going viral on social media shows Kohli exiting the airport as fans click pictures of the Indian superstar.

India begin Champions Trophy 2025 mission
The ODI series against Sri Lanka will mark the beginning of the Champions Trophy mission. The ICC event will be held in Pakistan and it is still not clear whether India will travel to the neighbouring country. In 2022, Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup but India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) organised the tournament in a hybrid model. It is expected the International Cricket Council (ICC) will possibly go with a similar plan if India doesn’t travel to Pakistan.
