New Delhi: Virat Kohli remains to be the best player in the world regardless of his ongoing lean patch, believes former West Indies player Chris Gayle. The star Indian batter suffered another poor outing after he was dismissed for just 5 runs in the second ODI match against England after having missed the opening ODI due to a strain.
The swashbuckling Gayle, who has played alongside Kohli in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), remains unconcerned about the bad form the Indian player is in. Focussing on his stats, he said that there are number of parameters that prove his excellence in the sport he has gained over the years.
Kohli is the best player in the world: Gayle
On the sidelines of an event in New Delhi, the former West Indian player, who was considered to be one of the fiercest players in world cricket, said that Kohli’s stats prove that he is the best in the world. Gayle said that the number of centuries he has scored across formats is unbelievable and that in itself is a proof of his greatness.
Adding to it, the West Indian also said that all the cricketers around the globe go through lean patches and this is just a phase which will pass by. He though acknowledged that the things are coming at the back end of his professional career and he should only try to pick himself up and come back again with a bang. Kohli has been struggling to score runs in international cricket and was expected to come back to form in the ODIs, which happens to be his favourite format.
However, his return was delayed in the second game against the English side as he succumbed again. He would like to show up in the third and final match of the series against England, which should give him the necessary push ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Asked if Kohli can break Gayle’s record for most number of runs scored in the Champions Trophy, he said: ‘It is easy for him just to get 200 runs (more to surpass Gayle). I don’t know how many games they will be playing but I am sure he can get over 200 runs, and I am sure he will get a century for sure’.
