New Delhi: Senior Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews is all set to retire from Test cricket after playing the first match of the ongoing two-match Test series against Bangladesh in Galle. Mathews, who is one of the finest all-rounders to have played for Sri Lanka, will continue to play white-ball cricket. Ahead of his farewell Test, ex-India captain Rohit Sharma sent a heartfelt message to Mathews.

Mathews will be retiring from Test cricket after making 119 appearances in whites for Sri Lanka. As wishes poured in for the all-rounder ahead of his farewell Test match, Rohit also sent a special message. Rohit and Mathews have known each other since their U-19 days and have played against each other for their respective national teams on several occasions.

“Hey Angi, congratulations on your fantastic career. Over the years we had some pretty good battles from our under-19 days to now. You’ve been a true servant for your nation and I’m pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you’ve done for your country,” Rohit said in a video message for Mathews.

Mathews has enjoyed a stellar Test career for Sri Lanka. He made his Test debut against Pakistan at Galle in July, 2009 and will be playing the final Test match of his career at the same venue. The all-rounder has an impressive 8,167 runs and 33 wickets to his name in 118 Test matches in his career so far. He is Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-getter in Tests, behind only the iconic duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Rohit Sharma retired from Tests last month

Rohit himself quit Test cricket last month, just days ahead of India’s squad announcement for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. The former India captain played his last Test against Australia in Melbourne in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Rohit had a forgettable outing in his last Test as he scored 3 and 9 runs in the two innings.

Rohit endured a dismal campaign in the Test series against Australia, where he could only manage 31 runs in three matches at an abysmal average of just over 6, the lowest by any touring captain in a Test series in Australia. The writing was on the wall for the Hitman, who dropped himself from the final fifth Test against Australia in Sydney.

Though Rohit had confirmed during the match that he had no plans of retiring anytime soon, he announced his retirement last month after being informed that he was no more being looked at as the captain of the Test team. Shubman Gill replaced Rohit as India’s new Test captain and will be leading the visitors in the upcoming Test series against England.
