Wayanad tragedy : Loose soil, huge rock materials make it the most daunting rescue operations ever

Wayanad: The landslide disaster has swept the homes and dreams of families in Mundakkai and Chooral Mala, the two villages that was partially washed away due to the flash floods on July 30th. Nearly 240 people are still missing as the rescue and search operations are underway in full swing.

However, the extreme weather with the presence of large chunks of clay, loose soil and rock particles in the Mundakkai and Chooral Mala region have become a major challenge for the rescue operations.

The army units are currently building the ‘Bailey bridge’ across Chooral Mala so that all the machineries necessary for emergency search operations can be taken to

One of the NDRF official who spoke to News9 said that without earth moving machines and JCB’s are required to break open the houses and shops that are under the soil as it is extremely difficult to enter these houses.

“Without earth moving machines and JCB it will be very difficult to proceed as it is difficult to remove the concrete bars from the spot. Once the bridge construction is over, the rescue operations will gather pace”, the NDRF official said.

The NDRF and the army are engaging in one of the most challenging rescue operations the state has ever witnessed in its history since independence where more than 230 people are yet to be located. NDRF officials suspect that few of them are stuck under the concrete debris in Mundakkai where the landslide has spelled the worst disaster during the wee hours of July 30th. The Indian Army personnel carried out a daring rescue mission, saving 19 civilians stranded in the Ela Resort and Vana Rani Resort, located beyond landslide-hit Mundakkai village.

The state government sources have informed that the construction of Bailey bridge will complete in the next 24 hours leading to concerns of rescue work getting further delay in Chooral Mala region.
