When will India’s Vinesh Phogat begin her campaign at Paris Olympics 2024?

New Delhi: With only three medals at the Paris Olympics 2024 so far, India are currently languishing at the 53rd spot on the medals table. However, India’s campaign in Paris is far from done with a number of top athletes yet to get their campaign underway. India still have several genuine medal contenders in the fray, who can add to the country’s tally in the upcoming days.

All of India’s three medals at the Paris Olympics 2024 have come from shooting so far with Manu Bhaker contributing two of those. 22-year-old Manu scripted history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in the same edition of the Games. She also became the first Indian athlete post-independence to win two medals in a single edition.

Manu opened India’s account with a bronze medal in women’s 10m air pistol before bagging another bronze medal with Sarabjot Singh in the mixed team 10m air pistol event. Shooter Swapnil Kusale added a third medal to India’s tally with a bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.

India are still five medals away from overhauling their best-ever medal haul of 7 medals from Tokyo 2020. However, they have a strong chance with many contenders in the fray. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, one of India’s strongest medal prospects is yet to begin her campaign at the Paris Games. The two-time Olympian will be fighting in the women’s 50 kg category and will be hoping to bag her maiden Olympic medal this year.

When is Vinesh Phogat’s 1st match at Paris Olympics 2024?

The most experienced wrestler in India’s contingent at the Paris Olympics 2024, Vinesh is a two-time Olympian but is yet to open her account at the Games. She will be looking to grab a podium finish in Paris this time around. Vinesh will begin her campaign in the women’s 50kg freestyle category on Tuesday, August 06.

The repechage round in women’s 50kg category freestyle wrestling will take place on Wednesday, August 07. If Vinesh manages to qualify for the knockout stage, she will feature in the bronze medal match or the gold-medal match in women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling category on Thursday, August 08.

29-year-old Vinesh is already one of India’s most decorated female wrestlers with three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, two bronze medals in World Championships and one gold medal to her name at the Asian Games.

Vinesh will be heading into the Paris Olympics having won the Grand Prix of Spain earlier this year and will be looking to become only the second Indian female wrestler after Sakshi Malik to win an Olympic medal for India.
