New Delhi: The 33rd edition of the Olympics is all set to get underway in Paris from July 24. The sporting extravaganza which promises to be a grand affair will see athletes from over 200 countries take part in the competition. The Olympics is a celebration of international sportsmanship as athletes from across the globe rub shoulders with the best in the business.

Over the years, USA have dominated in the quadrennial showpiece event and hold the record for most medals in the history of the competition. USA have bagged a whopping 3,105 medals in the 16 editions of the Olympics so far and are comfortably the most successful country in the competition. No other country has even managed to cross the 2000 mark in the overall medals tally.

The USA hold the record for winning the most medals in a single edition of the Olympics. USA won a staggering 239 medals at the 1904 Olympics in St Louis, Missouri in USA. It was the third edition of the prestigious Games where the hosts finished with 78 gold, 82 silver and 79 bronze medals.

Michael Phelps is the most successful athlete for USA in Olympics history having won a stunning 28 medals during his illustrious career. The legendary swimmer won 28 medals, including 23 gold across five editions of the competition between 2000 to 2016. Phelps also holds the record for winning the most individual medals in Olympic history.

USA is followed by the Soviet Union in the second spot with 1204 medals to their name. Germany is the third most successful country in Olympics history with 1211 medals followed by France, who have won 1040 medals in the quadrennial extravaganza so far. UK is in the 5th spot and one of the only five countries with more than 1000 medals in the competition’s history.
