New Delhi: Aiden Markram and Co. got all-out for 106 runs in 34.3 overs in the ongoing first ODI between Afghanistan and South Africa at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah. The Proteas side lost their seven wickets on 65 runs in just 20 overs.
Their batters struggled to perform against fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi and spinner Allah Ghazanfar. Farooqi took four wickets and Ghazanfar picked up three wickets in the match . South African team also lost more than five wickets for the first time in the history of ODI cricket.
Fazalhaq dismissed South Africa’s top-order batters while Ghazanfar demolished the Proteas’ middle order. This is South Africa’s first-ever ODI bilateral series against Afghanistan and the hosts have troubled Aiden Markram and Co. with some quality bowling.
Ghazanfar made his international debut for Afghanistan during the ODI series against Ireland in March 2024 and failed to take any wickets in two matches. But he performed brilliantly in the first ODI against South Africa and picked up three crucial wickets for the team.
Who is Allah Ghazanfar?
Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar was born on 20 March 2006. He is from Paktia Province, Afghanistan and has five older brothers. He started playing cricket in 2020 and began his career as a fast bowler but now plays as an off-spinner.
He has played for the Mis Ainak Knights in Afghanistan’s Shpageeza Cricket League and took five wickets in two matches. Ghazanfar also played for the Rawalpindi Raiders in the Pakistan Junior League. He was also included in the 2022-23 Big Bash League draft but was not picked by any team.
At the age of 15, he was included in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the base price of INR 20 Lakh but was not picked by any franchise. He was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at a base price of INR 20 Lakh as a replacement for Mujeeb Ur Rahman in 2024. He was also picked by Colombo Strikers in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024.
