New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) have named Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after fracturing his finger. Head coach Ricky Ponting had earlier stated to stay tuned for Maxwell’s replacement when the all-rounder’s campaign officially came to an end with the broken finger.
Maxwell endured an underwhelming IPL season this year as he could only manage 48 runs in seven games for the franchise, with six of them as single-digit scores. He sustained the injury before the PBKS’ washed-out game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on April 26, in which he was dismissed for just seven. In the subsequent clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Maxwell was replaced by Suryansh Shedge, and the team won by four wickets.
The IPL released a media advisory on Sunday to announce the new development at the Punjab Kings. “Punjab Kings have picked all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger,” the IPL statement read. Owen has joined PBKS for Rs. 3 crore.

Who is Mitchell Owen?
Born on 16 September 2001, Mitchell Owen hails from Tasmania, Australia. He is a right-hand batter and a right-arm medium pacer who has played 14 first-class games so far. The Hobart-born has also featured in 34 T20s, amassing 646 runs, which includes two centuries and a highest score of 108. The 23-year-old also has 10 T20 wickets to his credit.
He represents Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash league (BBL) and notably powered them to their maiden title earlier this year (2024-25 season), smacking a fiery 108 runs off 42 balls in the final against Sydney Thunder and equalling the record for the fastest BBL century as well, at their home ground Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

He made his BBL debut in 2021 but failed to make a mark due to fewer opportunities. Only in BBL 14, he was promoted as an opener and ended up being the highest run scorer with 452 runs, including two centuries in 11 matches.
His cricketing dream took shape in 2020 when he bagged his first state contract with Tasmania, a result of a remarkable performance in the 2019-20 Under-19 National Championships, where he accumulated 415 runs at an average of 60. Owen made his List A debut for Tasmania in February 2021 and his First-Class debut in October 2023 against South Australia.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) have roped in Mitchell Owen to replace the injured Glenn Maxwell for the remainder of IPL 2025 season. Maxwell suffered a finger fracture and was subsequently ruled out of the tournament. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
