New Delhi: India’s men’s doubles badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are on a roll at the Paris Olympics 2024. Satwik and Chirag have been exceptional at the showpiece event so far and have already qualified for the quarter-finals after a comprehensive victory against Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian on Tuesday.
One of India’s strongest contenders for a medal at the Paris Games, Satwik and Chirag have learnt about their next opponents in the quarter-finals of men’s doubles. The Indian pair will be up against the experienced Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in their next round. Aaron and Wooi are bronze medallists from the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The Malaysian pair are currently the world no.3 in men’s doubles and are expected to give a tough fight to Chirag and Satwik, who are the world no.5. Aaron and Wooi won the gold medal in men’s doubles at the BWF World Championships in 2022 and have a plethora of titles to their name. They are arguably one of the strongest contenders for a place in the men’s doubles final at the Paris Games.
How have Satwik and Chirag performed against Aaron and Wooi?
Satwik and Chirag have an underwhelming 3-8 overall head-to-head record against the Malaysian pair. However, they have won their last three matches against Aaron and Wooi having lost eight consecutive matches against them before that. It remains to be seen if Satwik and Chirag will be able to make it four wins in a row against the Malaysian pair in the quarter-finals.
While Satwik-Chirag are heading into the quarters after winning their last game against Fajar and Ardianto in straight games, the Malaysian pair of Aaron and Wooi went down against world no.1 Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in their last game.
Nonetheless, the Malaysian pair share an intense rivalry with Satwik-Chirag and are far more experienced compared to the duo. The men’s doubles quarter-finals promises to be a cracker of a contest as Satwik and Chirag aim to continue their stellar run at the Paris Olympics 2024.
