Why Sanju Samson won’t be part of Kerala Cricket League?

New Delhi: Indian cricketer Sanju Samson is a big name in the Kerala cricket fraternity. The 29-year-old is considered a sporting icon in a state where cricket is second to football when it comes to the crazy world of fans, which itself goes against the cliche of India being a cricket-crazy-nation.

However, Samson’s efforts to promote cricket in Kerala cannot be ignored. The Thiruvananthapuram-born player’s rise at the international scene has only helped the game of bat and ball to attract more eyeballs from the state, which is all set to host the first season of Kerala Cricket League (KCL).

The tournament will be played from September 2 to 18 with 33 matches, including semifinals and final, with six teams in contention. Many of the prominent state players such as Sachin Baby, Rohan Kunnummal, Basil Thampi, Mohammed Azharuddeen, and Basil Thampi.

However, Sanju Samson won’t be part of the Kerala Cricket League in the first season. His home-based franchise team Trivandrum Royals will be led by all-rounder Abdul Basith.

According to a report by Onmanorama, Samson’s name was not listed in the auction of KCL after the player asked the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for a break due to hectic schedule.

Sanju has been playing non-stop cricket from March till July. Two months of IPL plus T20 World Cup have been taxing. Even after the T20 World Cup, he was part of the Indian T20 teams which toured Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Hence Sanju asked the KCA (Kerala Cricket Association) officials for a break. His name was not listed in the player auction too,” a source was quoted as saying by Onmanorama.

When will Sanju Samson be in action?

Sanju Samson wasn’t part of the Duleep Trophy 2024, which is the curtain raiser for Indian domestic season. He is likely to be part of India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh on home soil, starting on October 9.
