New Delhi: It’s just hours from now on as the world will see a new women’s singles champion in Wimbledon 2024 when Czechian Barbora Krejcikova takes on Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the final on Saturday (July 13) at the Centre Court. The journey for both players has been nothing but a roller-coaster ride.
World No.31 Krejcikova’s path was marred with injuries and a series of illness that slowed down her progress in the rankings and didn’t made to bigger stages after her French Open triumph in 2021. This year, she made it to the quarterfinal, where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
A first round exit in the French Open to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in straight sets further exacerbated her hopes to grow. The last fortnight has been a massive turnaround for the Czech player to regain her lost supremacy, linking her with rivals Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka.
She stunned 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the semi-final despite being first set down. In the final, Krejicikova will meet an equally resurgent player in Paolini, who has found a breakthrough year. The Italian became the first women’s tennis player to reach finals of French Open and Wimbledon in the same season after Serena Williams in 2016.
The 28-year-old Paolini is also the first Italian women’s tennis player to reach the final of a grass-court Grand Slam. She survived the longest semi-final in women’s singles semi-final (2:51) in women’s history to pip Dona Vekic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). Both players came from a set down in the semis to book their maiden final spot in Wimbledon. The more aggressive and better composed will lift the title on Saturday.
