New Delhi: Following the recent tensions between India and Pakistan at the border, the cricket ties between both nations are at an all-time low. According to the PTI report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in talks with Afghanistan and, UAE to host a tri-series in Dubai if the Asia Cup gets cancelled.
This edition of the Asia Cup is set to be hosted by India and is scheduled to be played in September. But the Pakistan cricket team will not travel to the neighbouring country due to the hybrid model accepted ahead of the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Eight teams set to feature in Asia Cup 2025
Apart from India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Oman, UAE and Hong Kong are also set to participate in the Asia Cup 2025. Due to the lack of clarity surrounding the tournament, the PCB decided to initiate talks with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).
A well-informed PCB source said that due to the tensions between both countries, the board is working on another tri-series proposal. “With the Asia Cup now unlikely to be held in India as originally planned in September due to the simmering relations between Pakistan and India, the PCB is working on another tri-series proposal”, a well-informed source in PCB said as quoted by PTI.
He further added that if the Asia Cup is cancelled or postponed, the PCB wants the Afghanistan and UAE teams to play the tri-series in Pakistan in August. PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and the source said that the ACC will meet soon to decide on the future of the Asia Cup 2025.
“The Indian cricket board is yet to confirm its willingness to host the Asia Cup at home. So, it remains to be seen when the ACC council meets and makes a call on the future of the Asia Cup which is to be held in the T20 format,” he added.
