New Delhi: RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons has sustained a ligament injury in his left ankle and has been ruled out of action for a few weeks. The 21-year-old suffered an injury during Tuesday’s 1-0 loss against Liverpool in the Champions League and had to be replaced in the 78th minute by Yussuf Poulsen.
The Dutchman has now undergone a medical check and confirmed the seriousness of the injury. Leipzig have stated that the process of “treating the injury” hasn’t been made yet. For the club, this is a big blow as the playmaker is one of the most important players in Marco Rose’s team after being to the Bundesliga team on loan from Paris Saint Germain for the ongoing 2024-25 season.

In the game, Simons was already seen limping earlier following a tackle by the Red’s Alexis Mac Allister while the 21-year-old was attempting a shot at the goal. However, whilst taking an aerial challenge, he landed at an awkward angle. Simons was on the ground and came off the field after receiving some on-field treatment.
So far, Simons has enjoyed a decent season, scoring thrice and making two more assists in his 11 appearances across competitions. He had an equally successful stint with the club last season, scoring ten goals and being involved in 15 assists from 43 games.
He was also brilliant for the Netherlands at the European Championship, playing all six games in the summer, having scored in the semi-final defeat to England. Leipzig now has to play without one of its most important players and will miss his services in games against Borussia Dortmund, Celtic, and Inter Milan.
