Thiruvananthapuram: In a major revelation following the election debacle, CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan has finally admitted that it was the party’s inability to read the public sentiments and the erosion of minority votes that led to the huge defeat in the recently concluded polls.
The first official reaction of the party comes following heated discussions and scathing criticisms from within the party and its major ally, the CPI.
MV Govindan while speaking to the media stated that a large section of voters belonging to the SNDP and minority preferred the Congress party with the perception that they will come to power at the center.
The state secretary raised serious concerns over the BJP gaining traction in the state and added that it was a ‘dangerous’ trend in Kerala politics.
“The most important slogan raised by the left democratic forces across India was that the BJP government should be brought down. The BJP thought that this time too it could win the majority to run a Hindutva-fascist style of government by destroying the democratic secular federal system and the constitution. The entire BJP leadership, including the Prime Minister, said that the BJP would win 370 to 430 seats. However, it didn’t happen”, said MV Govindan to the press at the AKG Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram.
“Jamaat-e-Islami, SDPI functioned as a front. Jamat E Islami, which claims to be the voice of Muslims voted enmasse for the Congress party. It will have far reaching consequences for secular Kerala. The secular minded majority within the minority community will not accept it politically”, he said.
He alleged that various community and caste-based groups voted for the BJP for various reasons which the CPI(M) will introspect.
“The SNDP leadership switched votes for the Sangh Parivar. A section of the Christian community has taken a stand in favor of the BJP this time. There can be many reasons for this. It was the Congress votes that shifted towards the BJP in Thrissur”, said MV Govindan Master.
