Ernakulam: The CPI(M) is caught in the middle of a major controversy after statement given by the husband of a woman doctor to the police who has stated that CPI(M) leader Pramod Kottuli had been handed over Rs 22 lakh for his wife to secure a membership in the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC). The revelation has led to a political storm in the state following which the party is likely to expel the local leader from the primary membership.
What makes the allegation even more serious is that the money was collected allegedly in the name of PWD minister and senior CPI(M) leader Mohammed Riyas. Mohammed Riyas has brushed aside the allegation and said that he is unaware of any such issue and has stated that he is been targeted by a section of media for ‘obvious’ reasons.
“Everyone knew as why I am being targeted. I have nothing to do with this. People are unnecessarily dragging my name so as to tarnish me”, he said to the media.
Meanwhile, the party leadership and the accused has denied the allegation and have maintained that they have not received any notice from the state committee leaders on the matter.
“I was just asked by few party leaders as what was the matter and what exactly happened. I have told them that I have no idea on the matter”, said Pramod to the media on Monday.
The statement collection by the cops is done after the direction made by the DIG as per the instructions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who had assured in the assembly session that the appropriate action will be initiated against the accused if the allegations are proved.
The UDF MLAs in an expected move held a walkout during the submission alleging that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was trying to protect the party-men, who took bribes in connection with the appointment of PSC members.
Opposition Leader V D Satheesan in his speech directly pointed fingers at Pinarayi and said the latter was trying to settle the matter by paying back the cash that was received from a female doctor in Kozhikode. The CM in his strong-worded reply said the LDF governments never raised the number of posts of PSC members and the Opposition Leader was raising the allegations on the basis of his experience with the Congress’ style of functioning.
