New Delhi: Touted as one of India’s strongest medal contenders ahead of the Games, teary-eyed Nikhat Zareen bowed out of the Paris Olympics 2024 after suffering a 0-5 heartbreak against Chinese top seed Wu Yu on Thursday. The pugilist from China proved to be too strong for the Indian at the North Paris Arena, leaving her totally devasted.
Post the match, Nikhat, after gathering her emotions, said that she plans to go on a solo trip now which she has never done before in her life as it’s much-needed. The star boxer further said that she will spend some time with her nephew and niece and also vowed to come back strong post her vacation. Nikhat Zareen also admitted that she felt a lot of pressure and the bout consumed her thoughts totally.
Nikhat reveals preparations she did ahead of the bout
Repeating the sentence at least five times that she will come back strong, the boxer was trying to convince herself and everyone else around her that the Olympic road does not end here for her. Nikhat Zareen, who is a two-time world champion, trained on empty stomach and had limited water ahead of the clash which she hoped would be in her favour. She even went onto reveal that she could not sleep the night before the pre-quarterfinal contest.
The boxer also apologised that she could not win a medal for the country, saying that she made a lot of sacrifices to reach to the stage.
“Sorry guys, I could not win a medal for the country. I have made a lot of sacrifices to reach here. I had prepared myself well mentally and physically for this Olympics,” she said referring to the time spent away from her family and the hard training sessions she went through.
It was clear this defeat will haunt her for long. Yu dominated the contest even as Nikhat made a brief comeback in round 2 but that was not enough.
