New Delhi: Despite a strong effort from the young Avani Lekhara, the ace Indian shooter unfortunately missed out on her second medal at the Paris Paralympics after finishing fifth in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 Final on Tuesday. Avani made a good start but could maintain it as she exited with a best score of 420.6 across the three stages of kneeling, prone and standing in a world-class eight-woman field.

Earlier, Avani had earlier bagged a gold medal in R2 Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 (para shooting), giving India their first gold at the Paris Paralympics 2024. India have clinched a total of 15 medals in the showpiece event so far and look fully on course to surpass the previous best of 19 secured at Tokyo. The star shooter had bagged a gold at the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago.
Germany bags gold medal
Natascha Hiltrop from Germany bagged the elusive gold medal in the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions SH1 Final with a best overall score of 456.5 while Veronika Vadovicova from Slovakia won the silver with a score of 456.1. Chinese shooter Zhang Cuiping finished third on the podium with bronze in her kitty and a best score of 446.
The SH1 class is designated for athletes with lower-limb impairment for competition in rifle shooting events. Here shooters are able hold their gun without difficulty and shoot from a standing or sitting position (in a wheelchair or chair).
