New Delhi: India will face Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the five-match series scheduled at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on Saturday. With most of the senior players rested after a gruelling schedule that involved the T20 World Cup triumph, the BCCI sent a second-string team loaded with youngsters to Zimbabwe for the T20I series with Shubman Gill as the skipper.
Gill was in the USA with the World Cup Indian squad as a travelling reserve but was allowed to leave home earlier. He now eyes one of the two vacant opening spots in the seniors men’s T20I team. He will be leading a pack of young bloods that also include Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag who had a memorable outing in the IPL 2024. Both received their maiden T20I call-up for Team India and have been in the spotlight since the team’s departure for the African nation.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will be led by Sikandar Raza who failed to get his team to the T20 World Cup 2024 as Uganda stunned them in the Africa qualifiers to qualify for the marquee ICC event. They will be aiming to revive their reputation which has remained dented for long now. However, they couldn’t be underestimated as they have shocked Pakistan and Bangladesh in the past as well.
