New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell flopped on his much-awaited return for his old franchise as he was dismissed on a Golden Duck in their opening clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Maxwell was bought by the Punjab Kings for Rs 4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year.
The expectations were high from the Aussie all-rounder under head coach Ricky Ponting. However, he didn’t have the kind of start he would have expected for PBKS. Maxwell was sent packing on a duck by R Sai Kishore, who trapped him lbw in the game. Punjab Kings were going strong when Maxwell arrived at no.5, however, he failed to open his account.

The replays later revealed that Maxwell would have survived had he opted for a review as the ball was missing the stump. Nonetheless, it was a disappointing return for the Australian all-rounder. It was Maxwell’s 19th duck in the IPL as he achieved the unwanted record for most ducks by any batter in IPL history. He is followed by Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik in the 2nd spot with 18 ducks each.
Most ducks in IPL history:
Glenn Maxwell – 19
Rohit Sharma – 18
Dinesh Karthik – 18
Maxwell is one of the seasoned campaigners in the IPL and has been part of the league 2012 and has played for the likes of Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. While his hitting prowess and ability to take down any bowling attack on his day remain undisputed, Maxwell has been far from consistent in his IPL career.
He will be hoping to prove his critics wrong and have a more consistent season for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 under head coach Ponting, who shares a great rapport with the Aussie all-rounder.
Punjab Kings post their 2nd-highest total in IPL
Punjab Kings rode on a sensational knock of 97 runs off 42 balls from skipper Shreyas Iyer and quickfire cameos from opener Priyansh Arya (47) and Shashank Singh (44) to post a huge total of 243 runs on the board, their second-highest total in the history of the tournament. It was pure domination from Iyer and Shashank, who shared an unbeaten stand of 81 runs for the sixth wicket to propel PBKS past the 240-run mark.
