The movement of vehicles on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was suspended in Ramban district on Wednesday due to heavy rainfall that triggered mudslides and shooting stones at some places.
Ramban Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohita Sharma in a tweet said shooting stones and mudslides happened at several places along the stretch.
Sharma said the highway has been closed till further clearance, adding efforts are underway to restore the route for traffic movement.
The SSP said that the highway was closed at Mehar and Shalgarhi after heavy rainfall caused mudslides and shooting stones in the region. She said the affected stretch at Mehar was unblocked but Shalgarhi was still closed.
At least 350 vehicles, mostly trucks, are stranded on the highway in Ramban district, she said.
A large number of vehicles were stranded on the National Highway due to the closure. The Meteorological Department had earlier issued a yellow alert in Jammu and Kashmir.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sent men and machinery to clear the debris from the affected stretches in the district.
Earlier in March, a similar weather was witnessed by the people in Ramban district. At least 350 vehicles were stuck on the highway after heavy rainfall.
