Lovlina Borgohain says ‘right moves need be made’ to put boxing in LA Olympics 2028

New Delhi: Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain has talked about boxing’s inclusion in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. She said that no stone should be left unturned to push for the combat sport in the next edition of the Summer Games.

Lovlina, who claimed a bronze medal for India in the women’s welterweight category (69kg) in Tokyo four years ago, was recently included in the Athletes’ Commission of the newly formed interim Asian body by the breakaway World Boxing.

The 27-year-old pugilist has said that only right steps (from the World Boxing) will benefit the athletes’ to participate at the LA Olympics.

“That’s a big plus for athletes who want to perform their best and win an Olympic medal. All the right moves must be made to keep boxing in the LA 2028 programme,” Lovlina told Sports Authority of India on the sidelines of the ASMITA Women’s Under-17 football final.

Lovlina is one of the three members from India in the Asian body and she believes that this will help them to raise India’s voice at the global level.

“It’s a huge privilege to be on this committee as India will now have a voice in decision making, especially scoring and judging” needed closer and impartial introspection,” she said.

Why boxing isn’t considered for LA Olympics?

Boxing hasn’t been in the initial roster of the Los Angeles Games as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has derecognised the International Boxing Association, the previous global governing body which managed the functioning of the sport. The issues raised by the IOC were related to governance, financial, and ethical issues.

The competitions for boxing were managed by a special taskforce to look after the Olympic boxing tournament. However, the IOC was clear of continuing such unit after the Paris Olympics. The IOC wanted a structural global body to look after the matters of boxing. The World Boxing body has emerged to be the alternative to the now-defunct IBA but it lacks the official recognition from the IOC.

Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain advocates for boxing’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The sport’s absence stems from the IOC’s derecognition of the International Boxing Association due to governance concerns.  Other Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
