Malaria outbreak in parts of Malappuram keeps health department on guard

Malappuram: Fever cases in Malappuram continues to be a concern for the health department where it was dengue and westnile that was reported in the month of June and during the first week of July, but now Malaria cases have also emerged in the district where health department is taking the stock of the situation where the health volunteers have begun collecting blood samples in the affected area.

The outbreak of Malaria is reported in Ponnani region of Malappuram district. After one case was detected in Ponnani, the health workers conducted a house-to-house survey where they collected the blood samples and later two more cases of Malaria was confirmed with total three cases reported in the district.

Three cases of Malaria has been detected in the district till now”, said a press release by the health department.

In response to the outbreak, a team of the district health department and municipality members have intensified the preventive measures in the municipality areas and the nearby ones.

We request that anyone who has experienced fever in the past one month conduct a blood check up from a nearby hospital”, said Malappuram district medical officer, P Renuka.

To control the spread of the disease, the district health team has initiated fogging, spraying and other preventive measures. Also, a mandatory health check up for those coming and going to the affected areas in the district is been done. Mosquito breeding prevention measures in the region have been intensified. The health volunteers are also stressing the need to buy a mosquito net and mosquito repellent that needs to be used in every houses where the disease is expected to be spread.

Malaria spreads to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Signs and symptoms of Malaria include fever, chills, general feeling of discomfort, headache, nausea and vomiting.
