New Delhi: Amid the suspense over his retention and potential participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, MS Dhoni is reportedly set to meet with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owner and team management to discuss his future in the tournament. Dhoni, who was expected to hang up his boots from the IPL after the last season, is yet to make an official announcement regarding his future.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, Dhoni, who recently returned from the US, will meet the Chennai Super Kings owners in Mumbai and sit down with them to take a final call regarding his retention. Fans have been waiting eagerly for an update from CSK regarding his participation in the league next season. Despite having turned 43, Dhoni remains nearly indispensable for CSK such has been his legacy.
While his batting prowess has waned, leaving him performing the role of a specialist finisher down the order, Dhoni remains the undisputed leader for CSK and has also been doing well behind the stumps despite his growing age. While CSK want him to continue playing, the final decision will be taken by Dhoni whether he wants to play another season.
One of the most successful captains in the history of the Indian Premier League, Dhoni has led CSK to a record-equalling five titles. He led CSK for a total of 14 seasons from 2008 to 2023 before handing over the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad last year. Apart from winning five IPL titles, CSK have played a stunning 10 finals under Dhoni, showcasing their remarkable consistency under the legendary former skipper.
Uncapped player rule paves way for CSK to retain Dhoni
The BCCI recently confirmed the reintroduction of the uncapped player rule which is set to make it easier for CSK to keep hold of Dhoni. As per the rule, any franchise can retain an experienced player as uncapped if he has retired from international cricket, has not held a BCCI central contract or has not featured in the playing XI of an international match for 5 years leading to the relevant season.
Dhoni is eligible to be retained as an uncapped player having retired from international cricket in August 2019. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently revealed the franchise has not yet decided if they want to keep Dhoni as an uncapped player or not. A decision regarding the same is expected after the meeting between Dhoni and the CSK owners.
